From Spring Break to Finals: Perform at Your Best
Dear Scholar, As the term enters its second half, you may feel as though time is speeding up and the intensity increasing. There is a lot at stake and much to do in the remainder of the term. Now is the time to fortify your determination! I suggest adopting an academic workout training plan (similar to an athletic training plan). Maximize your performance by setting goals, working daily, and testing your knowledge. Set Goals: Use the S.M.A.R.T. method by making your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and on a Timeline. An example for a student studying Spanish could be: Every day practice speaking Spanish for 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening, using 5 new vocabulary words each time. Once a week make flash cards for new vocabulary and test my memory of the new vocabulary by having my neighbor/study buddy quiz me. Daily/Weekly Work: Identify study time each day, and find ways to assess your progress and knowledge. Take steps toward your goals every day. Leverage visuals to remind yourself of your goals and assignment timelines. Post a calendar of the term on the wall of your room and note the due dates for all remaining exams, papers, and presentations. Rewards: Small breaks and rewards are important components of pursuing goals and working effectively. Enjoy rewards at strategical times of your schedule. Make a date with a friend for a frozen yogurt following a big exam. Attend a music festival (one day only) after turning in a major paper. Such rewards offer your mind and body the opportunity to relax, recharge and move on. Pay Attention to All Responsibilities: As a dean I’ve seen too many students experience negative consequences by avoiding other responsibilities in order to focus only on schoolwork. Maintaining multiple responsibilities is part of the learning process. Watch for notices and emails regarding: -Housing: You must pay attention to housing information like applications, requirements and deadlines. It is understandable that it can feel overwhelming but it still must be done on time. Read through the information and add important housing dates to your calendar. -Advising: Pay attention to registration dates and add them to your calendar. Schedule time to consult with your advisor. Turn in any forms regarding your major, progress toward graduation, etc. -Ceremonies, Receptions and Festivals: Events like academic recognition and celebrations often happen in the spring. You’ll want to participate and will be invited to attend performances, presentations, ceremonies, banquets, festivals and more. However, time is limited, and you won’t be able to do everything! Make note of a few events you really want or need to attend, RSVP if required and list the events on your calendar. Keep academics at the forefront of your mind. Be diligent, and put in work time on a daily basis. Give your motivation a boost and take a break from your intense schedule with a simple reward, a soothing cup of tea with a friend will do! All best, Dr. J.
